R. Scott Randall
Printmaker

Working from existing images of ordinary things, such as money, silverware, and most recently fish! though I am apt to change on a whim, I’m drawn to the wonderful shapes I find in the details of the details. In them I have found an endless supply of interesting lines and patterns to work with.

I copy and enlarge the shapes, transferring them to linoleum blocks, which are then carved, inked, and printed to paper, wood, and metal. Rather than destroying or discarding the cut lino blocks, I save and often re-work them. They become part of a library of material I use in later prints. Over time I modify and re-purpose many of the plates, just as I do the patterns and shapes they were created from. Linocuts allow you to produce visually crisp but also wonderfully imperfect lines, which I don't think would be as interesting in another medium.

I do my printing in a small studio here in my Wallingford neighborhood home. I grew up in the Seattle area and attended Western Washington University where I studied art and graphic design.

Q: Subject Matter: Why money?
A: It's the root of all evil!, but it also is made up of wonderful shapes and symbols that we use everyday but that need to be brought to our attention to appreciate. I'd like to not that I feel terribly sad about the way they colored the new version of the new twenty dollar bill. I'd be happy to consult if they reconsider :-)

Q: Why flowers?
A: Great shapes!, and mom likes them too. Mothers love art. Buy some flower prints for your mom. Now.

Q: Why sharks? Why Salmon?
A: It is fun to yell out loud "Sharks! Sharks!" while I work on them. Salmon? They are just plain tasty.

Q: Robots?
A: Yes! Find me someone who doesn't smile when they see a robot. We'll send a robot to whoop them into shape.

Q: Are these available?
A: Just ask...prices are safe and sane! Contact me.
